The Baltic Sea oceanographic research community is broad and the history of the research is over 100 years old. Nevertheless, it is still no coherent and unique book on the physical oceanography of the Baltic Sea as a whole. There is a strong need of a such book, from oceanographers of work as well as the University cycle of cycles of education. The regional conference series in physical oceanography (Baltic Sea Science Conference, Conference of the Oceanography of the Baltic Sea, Baltex-conferences) on 500 scientists regularly participates. Further scientific work in the fields of the environment, chemistry and marine biology, and they need information on the physics of the Baltic. There are nine countries bordering the Baltic Sea and five others in the field of runoff. The Baltic Sea as a source of fish, means of transport and leisure activities are very important to the local society. In the runoff area, there are a total of 85 million people. Research and protection strategies must be developed, as the Baltic Sea is probably the sea most polluted in the world. Baltic Sea has become an internal sea of the European Union (except parts of small coast of the Russia in Petersburg and Kaliningrad), it is expected that the importance of the region will increase accordingly.
