The Pigeon

As late as 1960 there were still groups of Australian Aborigines, colloquially called Myalls, living through the interior of Australia in the traditional life style of nomadic hunter-gatherers. Some of their children had never seen a European and were unaware that a different world existed beyond the confines of their own existence.

This is a story of one such child who, early in 1943, was traumatically introduced to this other world. He went on, despite the trauma and the prejudices, to carve out his place in that world. This is the story of Jacky Wonga.

Jacky has made his way in the world of the Australian European until his wife succumbs to cancer. He is bereft and in pain and cannot cope without her. Jacky does the only thing left to him. Jacky goes walkabout.

This story follows Jacky as he attempts to find his roots, his beginnings in the mystical world of the nomad hunter gatherer. It follows his life through wartime Australia from the time when he was brought to a whitefella hospital on the doorstep of death to his coming home again. The angst and the trauma of a simple bloke trying to live in a world that is anything but simple is the emotional journey that is Jacky Wonga.
